Teeth Whitening

Teeth can lose their natural whiteness for a number of reasons including diet, ageing, certain medications, smoking and trauma, but a noticeably brighter smile can be achieved with teeth whitening – a safe, chemical process that eliminates discolouration.

Teeth whitening will only work on natural teeth and will not be effective on restorations such as crowns, veneers or dentures. However, these can be replaced to match newly whitened teeth.

Home whitening

Impressions are taken of your teeth so customised whitening trays can be produced to fit comfortably and securely.
The trays are worn daily with a bleaching gel for a specified length of time.
After completing the course of treatment (normally after a couple of weeks), you will attend a follow-up appointment to check your teeth have been successfully lightened.
We recommend you use our home whitening kits as they are more effective and also allow us to keep a close eye on your teeth, which can help avoid side effects such as gum irritation and tooth sensitivity.

In-surgery whitening

This is also known as ‘laser’ bleaching and involves placing the whitening gel on your teeth and using a bright light to accelerate the whitening process. It takes under two hours and is ideal for those who want noticeable results more quickly.

Internal whitening

This involves placing a whitening agent inside a discoloured tooth that has had root canal therapy, which means the inner part of the tooth (the ‘pulp’) has been removed and replaced with a rubber filling.

  • The lightening product is inserted into a drilled hole which is then sealed with a temporary filling.
  • About a week later, the filling and the bleach are removed and, if necessary, the process is repeated. When the ideal shade is achieved, the hole is permanently sealed with a tooth coloured filling.

You can help maintain the whiteness of your teeth by avoiding food and drink that may cause staining, and brushing your teeth at least twice a day.
Teeth whitening does not provide permanent results but home whitening trays can be reused if a top-up is necessary.

Frequently Asked Questions – FAQ

How long does teeth whitening last?

The length of time the teeth whitening lasts depends on person to person, it can be anything from six months up to three years. If you would like your teeth whitening to last, avoid eating or drinking things that can stain your teeth. Brushing your teeth at least twice a day can help maintain treatment too, as well as home whitening trays as a top up if needed.

How to rehydrate teeth after whitening?

Normally, your saliva will keep your teeth hydrated naturally after whitening, as it is filled with the nutrients necessary. However, room temperature water through a straw can help with the issues if needed.

What not to eat after teeth whitening?

Avoid the following after teeth whitening:

Tea, Coffee, Red Wine, Fizzy drinks, Soft drinks, fruit juices and alcohol
Food with natural or added colourants such as beef, ketchup, chocolate etc.
Cakes, biscuits, ice cream as this can cause irritation and staining

How teeth whitening works?

There are three different types of teeth whitening: home whitening, in-surgery whitening and internal whitening:

Home whitening: teeth impressions are taken to create custom whitening trays in order to fit your teeth properly. You will need to wear the trays daily with bleaching gel and your dentist will give the recommended time to wear them.

A follow up appointment will be scheduled after a few weeks of treatment, to ensure it is working.

In surgery whitening: whitening gel is placed on your teeth and a bright light is used during the process. This takes up to two hours, where the effects of whitening occur a lot faster.

Internal whitening: a whitening agent is placed inside a discoloured tooth after root canal therapy. A drill hole is created, which is then sealed with a temporary filling. After a week, this is then removed and repeated if necessary. After the whitening effect has been completed, the hole is sealed with a tooth coloured filling.

I have been going to St Helier Dental Surgery for a few years now and my experience has always been a positive one. All the staff are friendly and professional. I recently had the boutique whitening treatment done with Dr Zena and she is one of the nicest people I have ever met. She genuinely cared for me as a person which put me at ease throughout the treatment. It was very uplifting to see how excited she was for the success of my treatment. It is also reassuring to see how the surgery is following government guidelines when it comes to the Covid-19 pandemic. I highly recommend this dental surgery.
